I just bought a an old run Walthers SW1 hopefully for a future layout. My friend and I are working on decals to send to Highball, and I need replace the stock cab with a late cab with the square front windows. So the problem is where I could find a cab, the Cannon & Co. thin wall cab #1504 is out of stock everywhere I've looked. I tried cutting out the front of a cab in styrene, the result was ok but lackluster (I will need more practice). I could also find a cab off another loco and swap them.
Here's what we're dealing with: rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=57778
What's your suggestions?

Athearn SW7 cab? It's not as nice as the Cannon cab, but you can get flush-fitting windows for it from American Model Builders.
I would also contact Dave Hussey at Cannon to let him know that you're interested in the cab kit -- he has told me several times that he plans to rerun the kits, but it requires recalibrating one of his machines.
Cheers,
Colin
PS If you want one or more Athearn SW7 cabs, let me know as I have a couple of spares. Also an AMB window kit. PM me if you're interested.

I love the prototype photo in the link. It has modern cut levers, clean pilot, snow plow, ditch lights, and is setup for remote control, but still rides on friction bearing trucks. Outstanding!!!

One of the distinctive things with NW2 and SW1 cabs in the metal sash bars that hold the glass in. This means that the corners of the window glass are squared off, not rounded like rubber window gasket material needs. If you're not too worried about it, then use the Proto cab, but if you want the squared corner look, I would suggest you get a Kato NW2 cab, and modify the centre front windows to match your prototype, as those appear to be the only rubber gasketed windows on the cab. The back wall of your prototype has the distinctive squared corners.

I would like to thank all of you for your advice, I will try to find an appropriate cab. What iomalley said about the square windows reminds me of this older photo of the unit before it was repainted (and the paper mill bought the railroad). rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=314879Now here's a treat for you all (not my video)
