Consider stencilling some cars "For Neutronium Service".
It's the densest form of matter possible, formed by Neutron stars that aren't quite massive enough to form black holes.
Since I roster about five locos per car that's my justification...

Since I model the future, I don't need to know what purpose they serve....
Prototype research must be a real &$%#

Recasting copies!! Some people hate that, but I think it's brilliant! Especially for us "po folk"!! ~ Carmine

So I picked up a couple O gauge horns and some misc. doors and fan covers and another MP15 shell to splice into it. The horns are Alco S1's I think, they're pretty cool.
Got some more buckeye trucks and I think it will be an Osmium and Iridium Refinery. Osmium and Iridium weigh 1400lbs/sq ft. If the car weighs around 50 tons empty, then a shorty car with a load that is 1' high and 5' wide will be a total of 34 ft. to make the total weight 120 tons per car loaded. That will make for a very short and low car that is extremely heavy. Might require some kind of flat car between each load to have enough braking power.

Flatcars won't have much braking power without their own weight for traction and possibly sanders.
Perhaps you want something like a British Brake Van. It's like a transfer caboose with extra weight and sanders.

..... or at least some loaded 40' boxcars in between! LOVE the horns. They're PERFECT! This beast is really getting exciting. You've nearly convinced me to do a similar monster!!! Not exact, gotta preserve the original. Besides, I have a different style, and different parts. ~ Carmine

OK, so we're going to do a special braking car in between the loaded cars, another 50 ton chunk just for braking.... This is what we're going to haul: this car is at most 34', but I think a bit shorter will be better

If you're good at "cut & splice" car bodies, you could build anything you want.... Have you seen Soundtraxx's new "SoundCar" decoders? They're roughly $36-38 each, and have a myriad of rolling stock sounds. Loud too!! 3 or 4 of those decoders with a speaker each, in "box brake cars", will give you a "heavy" train, with clunks, crashes, bangs, flat spotted wheels, and a cacophony of squealing brakes, when you bring that puppy to a halt!!! I've seen it, and it's COOL!!!!

So OSMAX continues.... notice that my reporting mark is OSMX, pronounced awesome X.
So looking at my pile of detail parts I decided everything has to go... I first hit the shell will the dremel fibre wheel, then a carbon steel grinder and finally topped it off with the floor sander...
Can you imagine the horror if that was a shell from a $300 dollar locomotive?
After that I tossed it into the "icky box" as my daughter calls it, 5 gallons of pine-sol. I'll take it out in a couple hours from now and see what we got...

It occurred to me last night that you don't want to be hauling extra weight for braking.
What you really need is distributed power.
Another MP40DDAX on the other end of the train!
OR
A B-unit = MP40DDBX
OR maybe a Calf-Cow arrangement.
More Tractive Effort = MOAR POWER!!!

If you aren't happy with the job Pine Sol does, consider trying Castrol Super Clean. I find it very effective on Athearn blue box and Atlas red box models, which couldn't be more different from one another but are both stubborn to strip.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try some, Oven cleaner works OK for some models but Pine-sol was my favourite, until it changed and now does nothing. Dan M.

A B unit is a pretty interesting idea, I've got several more blue box DD40's that I haven't done anything with yet... The idea for the braking units comes from the rules regarding the movement of wreckers where a certain number of flat cars were required based on the weight of the wrecker to provide breaking ability.... My pine sol box seems to work pretty good, but I use a Walmart brand since it's so cheap. Purple Power is pretty good too, but a lot more expensive.

When the UP Big Boy was moved from Dallas to Frisco a couple years ago as part of the museum move, there were maybe 16 tank cars added to the train for braking. I'm not sure if they were loaded, but I would hope so since empty cars don't do much.
One of the jobs I work is a lead/trim job where we switch inbound trains and pull classification tracks to build outbound trains. Since we aren't using air to switch, we rely on the engine brakes to stop. If the cuts are heavier than 3K tons, we'll cut in one car of air per thousand tons of train (more cars if the cars used for braking are empties). So, pulling an 8K ton train means the first 8 cars are on air.

Water filled tank cars should give your RR the level of braking power you need... So you don't end up BREAKING your train!! And, it would keep your RR's budget lower. ~ Carmine
