Back in the late 70's/early 80's, did Canadian Pacific have ANY SD40-2's with the 81"? Painted in the packman scheme?

Thank you for the information.

Is this implying that we will be seeing a CP SD40-2 build in the future?

I doubt it. It was just a question out of curiosity. To do anything Canadian means I would have to buy parts from that POS north of the border and I will not do ANYTHING to support that pizdoo (that is a unexplainable Russion term for something VERY bad).

ok, I hope you're not referring to Miniatures by Eric.... Bowser will be doing the 81" nose'd CP version I see you understand. Miniatures by Eric has always been good to me. Way back when I started in HO, I was a CN modeler and MbyE was the only one around making Canadian parts. With the release of the Bowser model, I have put my QNS&L stuff to rest. Although now that I am modeling MoPac. It was going that route anyway. Actually the question was more for some N-Scale models. I need to do something to generate some cash for some up coming projects. I have a number of N-Scale models I could paint up and sell. Two were CP SD40-2's that were given to me. I have stripped them and thought of doing them up in the CP packman scheme and putting them up on Ebay. That is the real reason why I asked the question. They are 81" nose units. Problem is that there is too much Canadian specific stuff that needs to be done to them to represent a CP unit. So I am canning that idea. That brings up a new problem with the two models. The person who built these two models carved off the rear number board gaskets and sealed them up to represent CP units. If I build these as true CP units, I have my work cut out for me and I just wanted these to be a simple get it done and out. Miniatures by Eric makes the parts I would need to do all this and a have a couple of donor shells to cut the brake wheel mechanism off and transplant on the models. I just do not want it to take to much time and turn into another overly consuming project. It would be cool though. I think the biggest drawback would be the steps. Because of how Kato sills are done in N-Scale, putting in CP style steps and blending it all into the deck would be a real PITA! I would have to completely rebuild the deck plate and in N-Scale that is no picnic.

The -2 units up to 5674 had 81" noses. There is one that I can think of 5584?, which has 109" nose and angled blower hatch because it was a wreck replacement.
The compressors had a separate room, with 4 louvers under the rad. grill.
Some had 3 separate class lights, while others had the standard style with the lever to change colors, only on the # boards.

Yeah CP filled alot of holes in the roster thru the full production of the SD40-2s

If you want to do some CP mods, but not go hog wild, I'd suggest some of the used units in the 5400 series. They still had the American ladders, bit some had the bells on the # boards. Look at 5415,20, and 21. They had nose lights. The 5423 was a good one. It had high headlights. These were primarily assigned to D&H because they had cab signals.

The group with 81' noses are actually a lot bigger: 5560-5674. A number of them were wrecked and replacement later units built in their places however. 5560, 5583 and 5584 come to mind. Good listing here: www.mountainrailway.com/Diesel%20Roster%20Page.htmFor American secondhand units, as someone said, check out the 5400's (specifically.5415-5431). Nose lengths might vary though, I think most may be the longer standard 88 nose.

Dan, Thanks for reminding me that CP's first few orders of SD40-2 all had 81" noses - I was working on a phone away from my references when I sent my reply to Brian and was only sure of the EMD built units. Those wreck replacements match the order that they were added on to rather than their original appearance (e.g. CP 5560:1 was a SD40 that was wrecked and replaced as an SD40-2 matching CP 5950-6024 in details). Now that I have access to my Canadian Trackside Guide I see that the CP fleet SD40-2s with 81" noses consists of only five (5) units from the 5565-5674 group, plus the 5420!

Dan is correct with approx. 109 units as built had 81" noses, save for wreck inserts. I'm not counting the 5400s as they were not ordered by CP with CP specific options, being they're 2nd hand. Also worthy of note, SD40-2s 5565 to 5658 had SD40 style subbases with latches on the batt box doors.

I sure miss the old SD40 days! I'd bribe the diesel planner $1,000,000 for a set. GE SUCKS!

I have been told by some who are engineers that they would much rather have a compliment of SD40-2's than the current crop of hi tech locomotives.

Not from the guys I've worked with. Most like the SD75i and the fat ones like anything with a console. But these are CN types of course...

I was lucky because the AC units were first used in the west and filtered east with each new order. This left the SD40-2s for Montreal and the D&H. For a few years we would get rent a wreck SD40s back every fall because the new units were in grain service.
The earlier units were my favs because they had been rebuilt with upgraded cabs. I'll take a set of 5600s anytime.
