Hi all! I recently started a new piece of rolling stock. The model lacked almost all brake detail. I had to scratch almost the entire brake system rigging. Also, I'll be modeling it as a factory new tank car. I recently saw a string of tankers so fresh you could almost smell the paint as they rolled by. Really neat to see every single part glossy black except for the wheels/axles and couplers...which were all a really interesting fresh rust color/pattern. Here goes... The model I started with. In case you don't know, don't ever throw away metal frets as they can be used for all kinds of things. Here I use pieces of fret to make the brackets that hold all the brake rigging to the underside of the car. Scratching cut lever mounting brackets. I took more thin brass and made strips to build the "cages" along the bottom that protect the piping. This also shows the completed rigging. I still need to make cut levers but I have finished all other detail and am about to start glosscoating.

what size brass did you use for the brake piping and brake tube that runs nearly the length of the car?

I gotta get me some .010 brass now. I dont have any thin piping to finish my tank cars. Analogbeatmaker, do you have any good underside shots of tank cars?

Nice work ! Looks great. Paulie Thanks Paulie! I gotta get me some .010 brass now. I dont have any thin piping to finish my tank cars. Analogbeatmaker, do you have any good underside shots of tank cars? Yeah Steve, .010 comes in very handy for a lot of stuff. Unfortunately, I do not have any underside pics. I used other models that have all of the underside detail as a reference as well as a few photos I found on-line of the underside of a boxcar that had wrecked showing it's bottom side. I also referenced pics of the proto of this car and although they were side shots they helped place things. I'll have to tell you that underside detailing is the most difficult aspect of train modeling that I have encountered. There just isn't enough material to look at...at least that I can find.
