I've seen some applications for recycled CD/DVD motors in steam locomotives and I was wondering if this type of motor has any uses in diesel locomotives...

The problem with most CD drive motors is that they have a single ended shaft. Most diesels need a thru shaft and I would hazard to guess that this is the main reason.

How would you use the motor in a model application? They spin incredibly fast compared to what we would need for a locomotive.

What I've seen in steam locomotives is where it replaces the pancake motor which uses a single shaft, kind of like old Bachmann, Life-LIke, Tyco and PEMCO locomotives. I have several PEMCO's that I might try it on. As for the speed, I don't think that will be too difficult to deal with. I know my Ernst gearing kits are so slow that they could use a faster motor

The single ended shaft problem can be solved by using two motors, I recently done this with and SD40-2. The speed of the motor is not an issue since you very the voltage to get the desired speed and it can be programmed in the decoder.
