I hope to see the SD40-2's again that I have only seen once on a ballast train and get shots of those too.
These bad boys I have not seen here before because as most of you know the big GE's pretty much rule on the CSX
I'll keep an eye out for more stuff that is a bit different from the normal power to share with you all.

So, barring obvious advances in technology like Dash3+, are these really Dash 2s with 645s and solid state (or rudementary digital) electrical systems, or just CSX nomenclature?

I believe that the SD50-2 is purely a CSX designation. The SD50-2 is a rebuild program for CSX SD50s. I'm not sure as to the details involved with the rebuilding.

A quick search for CSX SD50-2 turned up a conversation on Trainorders:
There someone commented about comparing a NS SD40-E vs CSX SD50-2: Yes, they are basically the same. The biggest difference is that CSX simply derated its existing SD50's to 3000HP without any rebuild, while NS is doing a complete capital rebuild program with its SD50's as it coverts them to SD40-E's.
with another poster mentioning this:
My guess is that the SD50's being de-rated are 10 to 15 years younger than the SD40-2 counterparts. Derate them so they use less fuel and less stress on the prime mover and they will last longer, WITHOUT an expensive rebuild. When they do get worn out, you can then rebuild them if economically feasible.
The SD50-2's in question were renumbered into the 2400's correct? If so, the only ones I've had were in work train service. One of them died and wouldn't restart because of dead batteries, while the other handled 6000 tons of Ballast on the steepest pull on my territory single handed. It was at 'walking speed' because we started dumping ballast (good thing I didn't want to be going any faster), but it made it. I was impressed.
interesting stuff as I don't pay much attention to modern stuff....

I am learning a lot for sure and I guess mostly because I am just a train nut and have been since I was a kid but I have not learned all the ins and outs like a lot of you have. I mean don't get me wrong I know some things like when someone on Ebay is selling an SD45 BB and they call it an SD40-2 I damn sure know the difference between those two units just as I know the subtle differences between an SD40T-2 and a SD45 T-2 as seen from the outside. Can I tell you what prime mover is in each one? No did I know that one gets better fuel mileage than the other? Did not until I read it someplace on this site.
My point is I am a die hard railfan but not a pro Locomotive spotter and it is nice to have the help I get from all you guys to teach people like me to see the differences and notice them more when shooting stills or video. I just see a nice looking locomotive and notice the shape and size and weather I like or dislike that shape and size. Does any of this this gibberish make any sense?
