Does / has anyone painted the CP multi-mark on their engines ? I "usually" use the Micro Scale multi-marks, but am currently working on an RS18u that requires the multi-mark over the large rear grill.
I have no problem painting it, but am curious when masking the white half circle, the mask will get slightly distorted when conformed over the large grill. Do you do anything to compensate for that ? - or is it not as big a deal as I'm making it out to be in my head ?

That he has! Thanks for digging up the links Taylor, I had trouble finding them. Original post was buried here: www.facebook.com/groups/646778685374576/permalink/739650666087377/You may need to cut and work around grills or bumps, I usually cut the mask and bridge the bump with a small piece of tape, keeping everything uniform looking when you're looking at it from the side. For those ones I used a jury-rigged compass with an x-acto blade in it, not very accurate. I've since bought an Olfa compass cutter to do any future multimark jobs. It makes it super easy to cut the circular masks nice and smooth, I recently did two newsprint boxcars with excellent results. I don't think I'll be using many more multimark decals for any of my projects now - I can cut them to the exact size with ease (the Microscale sheet really doesn't have every single size possibility). www.currys.com/catalogpc.htm?CATEGORY=OLFA_COMPASS_CUTTER

Interesting approach - my thought was to paint the white FIRST, mask and then spray the red, with the black last. Any thoughts on that ? As a side bar - I noted in the linked Facebook pictures, he has done a couple CN sergeant stripe geeps - one has the stripes angled opposite to the other. (?) Is that correct or was there a proto-type anomoly ? www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154137650145311&set=o.646778685374576&type=3&theaterMark.

Red isn't too bad for white paint coverage. I've done a few multis on factory-painted equipment this way, if it's red or green it doesn't take as much coverage as black . I've seen people reverse-mask too, where they paint the white and then mask off the multimark and paint it all red. Patrick's 4536 is legit - the real 4536 was one of (a very few?) units with the stripes painted on the opposite direction.

Sorry Mark can't help with the masking, but what I have found to get the multi marks down is to use Solvaset and a hair drier. Put the Solvaset on the decal and the use the hair drier to settle the decal down. I've also done this on many car models in which the body is totally covered in decals and it puts them down first shot.

Well, I'm 2/3 the way there. Patched the white on first, masked it and sprayed the red. So far so good !
Richard - I usually do use the multi-mark decals, but with the large protruding grill on the long hood of the RS18u, there was no way I could see getting that decal to ever work, even if I bathed it in Solvaset ! The masking and painting has actually worked surprisingly well .... so far.

The worst is the grill area at the back of an (Atlas) C424...even with 100 applications of solvaset, it ain't gonna stretch into all those deep grills!
