I have a question for the pro model painters / people way more experienced at painting than me.
I have a group of P2K cover hoppers I am going to custom paint. All were decorated models, which I've stripped the shells to remove all the lettering. My question is, since these cars are in I unassembled kit form, would you bother stripping all the parts sprues as well? I plan on spraying the cars with primer prior to painting so I'm not really worried about the existing colors affecting the final product, but I'm concerned with too much paint building up. Please weigh in with your thoughts.

HI Chris,
The first thing I would ask is what color are the parts on the sprues? Based on the color is, would make me think about striping the parts sprues. If it is a light color I would not worry about striping the sprues. Now if it is a real dark color or bright color. I would most likely strip them. If you don't strip them I would recommend using a real fine primer like Tamiya. If you have any others questions, just ask.
I hope this helps. Erik

Personally, I wouldn't even consider stripping all those sprues of parts. The paint that's on them isn't that thick to start with, and an airbrushed coat of primer and paint really isn't going to add all that much more.
Mark.

Erik and Mark, Thanks for the input. I typically use the spray can version of tamiya fine primer. These cars will be painted in tru color GN sky blue. The sprues are mainly gray or yellow so I coverage should be alright.

Chris,
I think you will be fine, with those colors. With the primer and paint. You will only be adding .002 to .003 thickness of paint to the parts.
