Thank you all for taking the time to explain what NORFOLK SOUTHERN’s ADMIRAL CAB is. Though, I have heard of the CRESCENT CAB yet, it seems that no one has taken the time to explain what it is or how it differs from all other Locomotive Cabs, I think others automatically think one already knows…I do not. How is one able to spot these The CRESCENT CAB’S, how do they differ from all other Locomotive Cabs what sets these apart from other locomotive cabs from EMD , GE or a Rebuilders and a home built by other railroads. OK, in short what is a CRESCENT CAB?

Well, I could be a smart-aleck and give this answer. Or, I could be a bit nicer and give my summation based on the results above: Basically, the Crescent Cab is a Norfolk Southern home-build (and designed) version of the safety/wide cab. This is what is being applied to the (rebuilt) SD60E locomotives, not sure about others. Photo of cab here. Drawing here. Update: Apparently, this cab is also being applied to a C40-8

Glenn, Thank you. You did answer my question on NS's CRESCENT CAB, I would like to see how it looks on a DASH8-40C if photographs are available.

I'm a bit perplexed at the engineering of it. It seems odd that the grab irons have no 'bottom' or 'landing' to set your feet on, you reach the bottom rung and you have a sizeable drop to a step. Is this FRA compliant? I can't think of another instance where either a stirrup is at the bottom, or the deck as a landing.

I'll give NORFOLK SOUTHERN credit here, at least they didn't make their ADMIRAL and CRESCENT CABS SHH... ! After looking at www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=493840 the more I prefer the ADMIRAL CAB! SHH - SHORT HIGH HOOD Tom
