I've embarked on another project, and it's not a tank car. I started this project 22 years ago but lost interest. Plano is coming out with a upgrade kit, so I pulled it out of my junk box. A guy over at The Rust bucket forum posted some Great detail photos and listed a few measurements. I'm really hooked now. I rebuilt the end platforms because they were clunky and looked awful. I cut off the side vertical ribs because they are to small. I'm rebuilding the hopper bottoms and adding a ton of detail, including many gussets and rivets. The ends were upgraded, including removing the lower horizontal rib so I could thin the upper to create a gap as on the prototype. I laminated the V ribs so they are bigger on the bottom like the big version. Lots of work to go, but that's where the fun is! Check it out if you will. Thanks. Regards, Bobby

I did one 10 or so years ago. I contemplated the 12" lift but knowing my penchant for procrastination, knew I'd never finish it if I did... I have extra decals if you want them...I also have details photos of an 996-H style car which is what you're building. LMK

Thanks a lot Robert. I have a tank car project waiting in the wings. Sean, I'm good on decals and the photos at the Rust bucket are so good it's unbeleavable.

That's cool,I've had one of those cars for like 20years now but the roof walk always stumped me. Any idea when the plano upgrade kit is coming out?

Hi Bobby,
Looks great so far. Used to be a yahoo group just for such cars. Sean was the only one I saw get one completed, but thanks to Rick Jesinowski sending a model to Plano, it was enough to send Keith over the edge, and he is making a kit to upgrade these interesting models. I have 2 that are stripped down, and are look kinda similar to yours, waiting for the Plano parts to become available. The roof walk alone will be nice as he's supposed to provide a drilling template with the kit for locating the supports.
I am looking forward to seeing what you do to yours. When you post photos on your site, does it allow captions/descriptions? - it would be great if you could add details to the photos posted about what you did to make it better.
Thanks for sharing... Brian

Thanks Brian. Flicker allows captions, but unlike before, you have to click on the photo to read them. I started on the vertical side posts last night and installed 14 of the 36. I hope to finish today. I'm looking forward to plumbing the brake gear, lots of lines to run.
Regards, Bobby

Bobby,
Are you feeling well? This is not a tank car.

Brian, it's close, it's somewhat round......

Round is the key. Variety is the spice of life, so they say, who ever they are!?

Did you 3D print the body?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_printing3D printers have been on the market for several years now. Companies such as Shapeways will print things for you if you send them the CAD artwork for a small price plus the material (plastic) costs. The reason I asked is that the material that carbody is made from looks identical to the ultra frosted white material that Shapeways uses.

No, it's the old AHM body from the 60's or 70's.

The stripped down AHM is almost a translucent white plastic, very easy to cut/drill. I cannot wait for Plano's offering, I have another 2 to do, and believe me the end roof platforms were a pita to do, cutting from Apex sheeting. www.planomodelproducts.com/10930/10930.htmlThis will drive the price up of these 'ol AHMs on ebay I'm sure! AHM also had those 'breadbox' coil gons, which IIRC were a P&LE prototype...another cheap build...

This will be the first car I've done that had a fitted roof walk. But, I will double the thickness by using two silver soldered together like all of my walks.l finished the jack pads/lifting lugs last night. I bashed my ABDW valve using the ends from a IM hopper kit and a scratched center section. I have the brake gear box done too. I'm going to do the J-1 relay valve when I'm in a real good mood. It's a tiny thing that is made up of arround 20 parts. More photos soon.

I have the car plumbed! I've installed the jack pads/lifting lugs, train line, and IM 38" semi-scale wheels. The scratched J-1 relay valve consists of 35 + parts. It's the device mounted on top of the ABDW valve.

Shoot, Bobby, I don't think a real J-1 relay valve has 35 parts, please show us a close-up when you can!!
