This BLI was a UP unit, striped down and painted in ATSF scheme with Scalecoat colors.
Several details were added to match the prototype. No weathering so far, I like how it looks.

Looks good!
But now it looks like I need to add some stuff to my 5119...

Dynamic brake housing, truck air reservoirs and jacking pads are Athearn, short hood, long hood end, fans, turbo and inertial filter hatches, anticlimber, steps, step lights, cab windows, etc. from C&C plus a lot of DA and DW detail parts.
Couldn´t use the C&C cab since it didn´t fit hood width.

Heck with all that you could have almost scratched built one. What's your opinion between the different manufacturers for rebuilding, which do you think is easier to work with to customize?

Athearn BB is the best choice. It was difficult to work with BLI, as examples: the way underframe is built limits detailing possibilities for traction motor cables, tank supports, etc. and space between trucks and underframe is compromised reason why tank air lines were done straight rather than angles as in prototype and truck air tanks had to be relocated slightly below to provide enough room for swinging. Also, hood plastic is very delicate... when stripping paint the dynamic brake housing was practically disintegrated even alcohol was used.
Cheers, Joe

Funny how we keep coming back to Athearn BB. Love the chunk of truetrak you display your model on for pictures, I got a piece of that around here somewhere too.

Awesome job Joe! This engine looks great. Maybe you could post more pics as several of these are slightly blurry. I would love to see pics in natural sunlight.
