Speaking of decoders I plan on esu loksound and cutting the front weight to fit a speaker of better size..
I don't trust factory boards and hate adding resistors for leds ...takes up room and room we can't afford to lose with the p2k weights that are designed for dc

Yeah loksound is really the cat's ass I hear. I'll give this one a try and if I don't like it, then I'll definitely be getting esu loksound. I now have 5 projects on the go that include dcc and sound. Looking into getting the PR3XTRA SoundFX USB Decoder Programmer as well.

As well as Hobbycraft Canada doing up the Proto 2000 GP38-2 as Railink 2002, at some point a while back there was a custom run of Athearn blue-box GP38-2's decorated as Railink 2002 done as well. I know of someone with a full unit and a spare shell.

I wonder why they chose 2002...

I wonder why they chose 2002... Sorry, I just talked to my source again, he said the Athearn GP38-2's were actually done up as Railink 2000 and not 2002. He sent a photo of one before, but I can't seem to find it. Small company commissioned run for the OVR I believe.

Dcc installed. So easy. Had the sound in and working but the speaker is waaay too big, so I'm just waiting for my small speakers to show up to finish. Removed the numberboard lights temporarily, to avoid any problems I might have, until I install led's. Debating on buying the digitrax PR3XTRA or jmri decoder pro to program sounds, since the generic one just doesn't cut it.
Any advice?

Ok so how rare are these? Not entirely sure, but the Athearn ones don't seem to show up much if at all in the usual places. The P2K's show up from time to time on eBay. Hobbycraft Canada had a thing for doing some of the smaller or more obscure roads in their releases, such as Railink, QGRY, OCRR and QNSL to name a few. Dcc installed. So easy. Had the sound in and working but the speaker is waaay too big, so I'm just waiting for my small speakers to show up to finish. While I can't help you in programming them, the bigger the speaker the better the sound quality, especially with small speakers that may not have as much bass to them. Of course, the enclosure and where you mount it matter as well.

I forgot I did color match some sunshades for just because so I did something to mine lol
On the subject of speakers I've been hooked zimo style speakers and make my own wooden enclosures
For location mill the front but leave a ledge and you will have decent room and try to fire it down.

I ordered several zimo speakers for this, and a few other projects. Now the waiting game again!

Wow, this looks like a rare locomotive, I never knew P2k made the GP38-2 variant with the radiator fans spread more far apart.
