Sorry Kurt, did not mean to take your discussion in a new direction. No need to apologize- these kinds of conversations are what makes this board fun and exciting! I'm very interested in your approach to a cheap build and I think you may have found a winning combination. I can't wait to see a thread on yours! On another note I added up my expenses on this model... $45.00! By far the most money was spent on the motor mounts, new wheels and decoder- around $30. Not bad at all. Now who out there says you can't build affordable locomotives anymore?

It really looks great! Nice budget build.
What jumps out at me the most is the overall finish. It is clean. The paint is crisp and just plain well done.
Mine won't be as cheap as yours for sure. The decoder negates that. If I cannot find Q-equipped units, I am going to also have to add Cannon fans because I can't just added the DA Q-fans and then leave the DB fans molded on. I do have enough Q-exhaust/DB hatches to convert a standard 40-2.

Looks awesome! well done! With the tru color paint, did you use acetone to thin it or there thinner? Also did you thin to about the consistency of milk? I'm looking for a replacement for my floquil paints and they seem to have several railroad colors.

Here is the finished product after a light weathering job and AMB windows. I am happy with the results and feel its time to move on to the next challenge. Thanks for all the feedback!

Kurt,
The trust information decal you have on the rear of the side sill. What decal sheet did you get that from?

Brian,
If I am not mistaken it is on Microscale sheet 87-48 a data sheet for all builders 1939-1992.

Kurt, The trust information decal you have on the rear of the side sill. What decal sheet did you get that from? Microscale 87-716 Burlington Northern Diesel Data. Great sheet I've used it on lots of different models.

Thanks Kurt. I will put it on my list to order. Although I may have it. I'll have to check my box of decals.

Hey Kurt, pm me. I've got an extra blue box HTC side frame set I can spare for ya. I scored a ridiculous amount of full sets of HTC & flexicoil II on eBay a while back for under $20. The -2 came out awesome! Love that MoPac blue.

I like this build. Sometimes less is more. This engine is a real runner. No worries about breaking things off.
I have a bunch of blue box kits ready to paint. Back in the late 1980s-1990s, I bought lots of them for about $20. These will eventually be done for my proto freelance. I will be able to run the snot out of them. They are sturdy enough for many miles of hard running.
Your thread showed how these old kits are still very viable. A minimum of work results in a nice simple model.
