Few years back I bought two sets of these ditchlites. To date they are unused but I have started to covert my loco lighting to LEDs and would like to replace these bulbs with SMD's.The only thing is I don't know if the bulbs are removable and that is what I need to know.
So does anyone here know if they are and if they are how? Any help will be appreciated

If I remember correctly, they are small 1.5 volt bulbs shoved up into the ditchlight from below. They are glued in with a water based adhesive that easily softens with warm water. Just pull them straight out from below. You can then use the same hole to insert your SMD LEDs. Just make sure when you insert your LEDs that they are square and point straight forward -it will be real obvious if they aren't.

It does depend on the age of the loco and the style of ditch light housing in some cases. In some of the earliest models the plastic of the ditchlight surrounded the bulb and sealed the bulb in place when glued. Athearn at the time offered the assembly (the plastic and the bulb already assembled) as a replacement part.

Lyle,
These are the replacement units for the SD70s and are still in the bag.I thought about just using them as is but I've heard from several sources the bulbs don't last very long and since the main lighting will be LEDs I think the ditch lights should be too.
Will let you guys know if I am lucky removing the bulbs or not.

Worst case you'll have to use a drill bit to clear them out, if you aren't planning on keeping the bulbs it might be the easiest way.
