There wouldn't be any kind of problem with the decal paper at high heat, would there? If not, this is looking like a really good idea, especially for a black unit, so it could go right on the frame...

Laserjet decal paper has to take the heat of the toner fuser, don't ask me how much heat.
I almost ruined my late wife's printer with plastic coated aluminized paper when printing a model Mercury-Atlas rocket, so the heat is significant..
I'm just speculating here, I was hoping to find a supplier closer to the wet coast, but I want to try it.
A worst case would be a loss of a sheet of each plus shipping.

Ah yes! I forgot those guys,I was given a PCB sheet from them.
I think I bought some other stuff by them when a local electronics place closed, I'll have to dig.
The dry transfer stuff looks promising for masking, the way we used Letraset.

Still nothing cool to report. I had a parts order in with Walthers for handrail stanchions, but after a couple months waiting I realized that was stupid and I am getting them direct from PSC. When I have those, I'm going to paint and install them on the hood, and then I can finally proceed with decaling. I'm planning on using one of the laser printers at school to handle the hood text and builders plate decals, I'll print some test pages until I get the right size and color and then finish up the decals. I'd sort of like to try that foil paper from the previous few posts, but I'm also anxious to finish this locomotive at all.

Finally, a new picture! I am trying the laser/foil method of making builders plates. If that doesn't work, I'll just print some gray builders plate text and not worry about it. Actually, if I had realized how small these are in the first place, the fact that they aren't reflective might not have bothered me. At this point, it can only get cooler... I was thinking about making a couple extra sets if anyone wants any. Only appropriate for 1943 and 1944 built Baldwin locomotives, since these are the steel plates they used those two years. But hey, if you need some, let me know.

The test is over. Depending on temperature, the foil either sticks to the decal paper and toner, or just to the toner as it should. If it sticks to just the toner, it obscures all the detail, and I get some blobs inside a circle. I can't get the printer to print gray well, so I think at this point I'm going to print black decals for the parts that should be black, and decal those over top the pure silver decal paper. I'm just hopeful that the paper (Micromark) isn't so thick that you would be able to see it sticking out from the model, as I have no way to punch out an appropriate sized circle from the paper.

Not yet. I need to sit down with a knife and some Solvaset and then things will get interesting again.
