I'd be down for that as long as we put enough thought in the finished product. There are 8 different stanchions styles on an early EMD SD40-2 that, to my knowledge, only PFM covered all the different types. Later types with the angled blower had a 9th style. I just ordered 12 sets from Precision Scale, so we're not at a loss for EMD stanchions...its just nobody seems to want to stock them. I asked my LHS to order them, and he said no, they don't send COD...that seems kinda dumb to me. With the advent of multiple forms of online payment, COD is going the way of the dodo. And if you're going to 'have some compromises' then why bother. Sorry to be frank, but if you're not able to do it with the maximum accuracy technology can muster, then go buy Precision Scale and save your efforts for Alco Century stanchions.

Your remarks are welcome. I have also ordered plenty of PS/PFM or PIA. Who the heck is it that they bought?
Anyway, my beef with them is they are thick. It is possible to make them look really good, but it takes a long time to do that. Yo have to file each one seperately. There is ONLY one way to truely make the stanchions to scale and that is injection molding. Etching is just out of the question ond nobody but Railflyer was going to machine them from solid aluminum. That is not going to happen anytime soon. Injection molding is just way to costly. The next best option is 3D printing.
I was just trying to come up with a way to get ready to run stanchions without having the time consuming task of thinning them and cleaning them up.

Just a thought/question: I'm guessing that once all the preparatory work is done, then the cost of actual materials to make the stanchions is relatively low. That being the case, would it be possible to put several designs/types in the same packet without increasing the overall cost too much? Or someone's going to land out with the job of having lots of different types being stored and sorted prior to delivery.

I do not have any issue with doing all the different types and kitting them all in one package. This is not a business adventure. This is a is there enough people interested to spread the cost out so much that it does not cost any of us that much. We as modelers get the quantities we think we need to last us the rest of our modeling days and be done with it.
I only need to get the proper dimensional information to do all the different stanchions.

Altho I am mostly focused on N scale, I would be interested in anything that would work with an SD40-2 and/or SD70Ace. I have a couple of units that I would love to upgrade from the factory handrails (even tho I might never have any place to run them).
Presumably these will need handmade wire railings, what size would that be?

I believe handrails are 1.5" diameter which comes out to 0.017. Since nobody makes 0.017 diameter wire, the closest is 0.016".

Information will come from some field trips and from those that know. When I go to the St. Louis meet this year, A friend and I will be spending a couple days at the NREX facility in Mt. Vernon, IL. I think I can get some stuff from there. Maybe even con them out of some stanchions.

That had actually been posted a few times on here just had to finds it. I am excited about this and hope we can make this happen.
I know I use 0.012" brass to do my handrails now and when they are painted the thickness comes out to almost 0.014" I believe.

Hi Guys,
Anthony you are right on the money with the sizes. I have switched over to using 0.012 wire. After having read post on another form by Tony Sessions. I was surprised how much of a difference it makes. You can count me in on this as well. We need these stations bad.
