I recently picked up a set of rapido passenger cars along with an FP9. As I am using sergent couplers for my equipment I got some Type-H couplers for this passenger train. Last night I installed the new couplers in a few of the cars and the FP9 and put them on my test track to check how well they worked. The problem I found was that the couplers are spaced just slightly too far apart to couple properly due to the diaphragms between the cars. I can get couplers together if I pick the cars off the track, but that isn't quite acceptable. Has anyone here run into a similar problem?

With Kd's I changed one end on each car to a medium length coupler (I forget which one, sorry)

How do you UNcouple the sergents with the diaphragms there ?
Mark.

How do you UNcouple the sergents with the diaphragms there ? Mark. They sell a special uncoupling tool that has a thin blade on it the goes between the couplers and the diaphragm. I haven't been able to test it's reliability since I haven't got the couplers working on the cars yet. I think I might have to break out a few of my Walthers cars to test.

Here's a bit of a follow up.
I tested coupling the cars some more and I found that the biggest problem I was having wasn't the diaphragms. The issue actually was the vertical alignment of the couplers. Apparently the Type-H couplers do not have much of a tolerance for vertical misalignment. Also, I was able to bypass the coupling difficulty with the engine to the cars; I also have an intermountain F9B to go with this train (which I intend to keep the power consisted). The B-unit couplers overhang the ends further, giving plenty of clearance for the couplers.
So I still have a bunch of coupler tweaks to make with these cars to ensure satisfactory operation, but I think the question I had has been answered. Thanks guys.
