Hey all, here is my finished KATO Capital Equipment (CEFX) lease SD40-2 that has just been completed. This unit started out as a KATO UP SD40 which I modified to one of CEFX's leased SD40-2 rebuilds. Since the KATO SD40's have molded plastic pilot steps and hose trays, I had to cut those off and fabricate new pilots out of styrene. After most of the body surgery, putty, sanding, and paint touch up was completed, I focused on some basic detailing. I added the new horn, antenna, AC unit, hose tray, airlines, coupler lift bars, spare knuckle brackets, upgraded fuel tank details, ditchlights, custom made snowplow, MU stands, cables, and jumpers, plus the new highhood brake stand and wheel. I then removed all of the original UP lettering, numbers, and heralds by stripping them off with Micro Sol and an eraser. I did the new yellow patching with CSX yellow which was the closest match to the yellow used for the patching on real CEFX units. To complete the painting and decaling phase, I added the Microscale made CEFX decals and also some mismatched warning/safety labels from various other sheets. I also added the real reflective stripes to the sills made from Western Safety reflective tape. I then did all the final paint touch ups and spot repairs and finished with a coat or 2 of Testors gloss finish. Finally, the unit got a good bit of weathering, I did all of the aging with acrylic and chalk pastels. The black grime streaks are created using a wash of acrylic. I finished by adding the final details and giving the entire model a dullcoat to seal everything together. Here is the real CEFX 2813... www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2897601
