I've been working with a designer to get a C39-8 modeled and printed using Shapeways and here is the first complete and ready to print test drawing. I will be getting it printed so any revisions can be made. Here is the link to the shell on Shapeways, let me know what you think. www.shapeways.com/model/1649103/ge-c39-8-ho-1-87-scale.html?li=aeTabs

This is very interesting. I am very interested in seeing how this turned out. Please post it when you get it.
If it looks this good on the final product then I think you might have something here.

I am still very interested in this project. One thing that caught my eye is it appears the inertial intake is to big. But not having it in my hand to compare to a RPP C32-8 shell I c would say my eyes deceive me. One question I have is will these be done in all three phases? As the recessed intake grills under the radiator are late phase. For NS these should have three dynamic brake intakes and roof blower ports. I am not sure about the square piece between the dynamic section and the engine door section either. NS bought three phases of C39-8's in this body style, CR had one phase not sure which. Here is a good selections of detail pics for the C39-8: tonysissons.zenfolio.com/p646401081Looks very good so far I would love to had one to look over, so I am in for one. James Wall

This is a Conrail version, if this works out then the NS versions are a possibility along with a C32-8, and a bunch of other un-produced GE's Remember this hasn't even been test printed yet, that is happening Friday. The only things we had to draw this up are rough measurements posted online, pictures, and a blueprint with some measurements from GE of a C32-8, I have never heard back from GE or the Conrail Historical Society, which kinda irks me. As soon as I receive the shell we are going to make all the corrections needed, the Anticlimber is too short for one, then it will be ready for use. Also noticed we have designed it to use Smokey Valley stanchions, and A-Line etched brass steps for a B40-8/C32-8

I myself would be very interested in getting a few of these engines. What do you plan on using for power/frame for this engine. I also would want about 4 of these for my NS fleet. Please keep us all posted on your great work! I also would love to ask if anyone has purchased any of the SD60 cabs that a Gentleman is making using shapeways? I have seen his stuff on there and I am very curious. Thanks and keep up the great work

As I stated I do like what I see. Until I could see the real thing it is hard to tell how everything would look in the tea l world. Keep us posted! On the etched steps, if there is some way to add small "footings" for the etches to sit on would be a good revision.

The etched steps are supposed to sit on shelves, I guess he missed that, I can't wait to get the shell and see if this technology is feasible for our industry. Supposedly the material this is being printed in Frosted Ultra Detail, it's supposed to show the tiniest details in 1/220th scale. A week or so I should know more and have pics to show. I really hope this works out well, as I have so many locomotives I want to print it's unreal.

Got the test print, shell looks surprisingly good for not having any real dimensions to go by. The good, small details look good, including the hinges and door latches, the overall dimensions are pretty good, even the raised lip around the cab windows came out. The A-Line brass steps fit perfectly, the shell fits over the Atlas chassis with little to no modifications
The bad... I think we made it too thin as a couple places it's warped nothing that's not fixable, I believe if the shell is made twice as thick it will be better, the right rear of the shell had the worst of the printing lines, but you can clean it up really easily by scrubbing with a toothbrush, and some sanding sticks. The major work will be with the radiator section, it came out too narrow, the nose also needs resized a tad, The Frosted Ultra Detail plastic is so translucent you have to primer the shell to even see the details.

Yes I will post a couple pics of the shell in primer in a few hours. We have made updates to the shell, it has been made thicker and the radiator housing has been fixed, I'm trying to find another company to do more test printing.

Well pictures are on hold, I primed the shell and then did some more work and I didn't want there to be too much paint buildup so I decided to strip it bare to not only remove the primer, but clean any residue from the shell. Well long story short, Frosted Ultra detail plastic whatever it is hates alcohol, the shell became soft and deformed and split. So I'm waiting on the new and improved shell to be completed and shipped. On a side note I finally came across an Overland Conrail C39-8 on the bay, so I also have it on they way for measurements. Stay tuned, I'm determined to bring a good C39-8 to market. I would really like to make this a kit with the plastic shell and etched brass detail parts and brass handrail stanchions.

Just because it's Overland doesn't mean it's perfect. It's probably ok to compare, but don't use a model's measurements as gospel.

Wow, looks pretty good. Did it really cost this much to get it printed?
(Frosted Ultra Detail Matte translucent plastic that showcases fine and intricate details. $140.45)
Expensive shell, but then again, costs a bit to get all the parts to bash one from model parts/detail parts also.
