I'm looking to detail a pair of Walthers SW-1 for the G&F as seen in this photo.
Here's a couple more of #70 in Southern Paint
These switchers were built with MU, taller "angled" handrails on the ends, and a box across the end walkways that housed the necessary plumbing for the MU equipment between the bodies and the ends.
These are going to receive the NWSL couplings to replace the Walther's tubing that connects the motors to the trucks. But I'm looking for suggestions for the handrails, walkways, and drop steps. Also the cabs will need to be either reworked or replaced with a Cannon cab to represent the different windows from the model.
Can any of you recommend somewhere to source these parts?
And lastly, the slope on the hood near the cab needs to be corrected. I'm thinking of just replacing it with a sliced out section from an Athearn SW. Is there any reason this wouldn't work? Or do any of you have a better suggestion?
THANKS!

Hi cd, Most of the parts you are going to need are made by Custom Finishing. Cf made a insert to convert the hood section you are talking about. It is now out of production but they show up on ebay or maybe some one here may have one or know where you can get one. Here is the link to the item part number and description on Walther's site. www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/247-285 For the handrails you will also need CF part number 241 EMD switcher end platform stanchions set. Here is a link to there Web site. www.customfinishingmodels.com/As for the cab you are correct on the Cannon cab part number 1504. The boxes are going to have to be scratch built and the drop step you might be able to use the Detail Associates Alco long drop step as a fill in. I am not aware of any one who makes that step for a EMD. Three places I can recommend to try to get these parts are, Des Planes hobbies, Hobby Haven(Bowers retail arm) and Highball Graphics. I have purchased from all of these places and highly recommend them all. Good luck on your project and please keep paying your progress. Erik

Everyone seems to be out of Cannon parts right now. Ive been looking for a 1504 cab for my TR4 project, Des Planes was out of stock, along with just about everyone else. Lucked out and found one on ebay last week.
Walthers and a lot of places seem to be out of stock of a lot of parts right now for some reason.

Thanks for the replies. I already have the CF hood piece, but was hoping to be able to make the modification with styrene.
I noticed a few other builds on here with similar handrails to what I need on some P2K units. Wondering if these parts might be available directly from Walthers?

What about a Kato NW2 cab? They look good with flush fitting glass. You have to be careful because I think the Cannon cab has window rubber gaskets moulded on, but the NWs had screw-in blocking on the inside holding the glass in place. You can see in your SOU pic that one of the panes is rubber gasketted in, but the remainder are blocked in.

"What about a Kato NW2 cab? They look good with flush fitting glass."
The problem with the Kato cab is that it has the wrong windows on the hood side. These late-SW1s featured the revised good taper that was common on SW7 and later switchers as well as the alteration of the hood side cab windows, also a feature common on SW7 and later switchers. A person who would want to model a late-model NW2 would be faced with the same changes.
I would almost think that the Walthers/Life-Like cab would be right, though you would have to change the headlight to match what was used on the G&F units.

The front windows of the cab are wrong, the back windows are closer to correct. And I'm going to model the large single headlights as the units were before being re-fitted by Southern.
