Sometimes a model should stay a kit... I'm nearing the finish line on my Sylvan CN Aluminum tank hopper build, and to say it was a chore is an understatement. Firstly, its resin...and resin should never be painted silver!!! The surface finish is not good enough for a colour that will draw to its flaws. The end cages were so frustrating that I had brass photoetchings made (at great expense) so that I could actually finish the model! And the decals (CDS on decal paper) were some of the worst silvering (haha) of decals I've ever dealt with. But anyway, here it is... I have a CP one to build too, but thankfully its black...

iomalley...that is a superb job my man! I can't tell from the one pic but did you add all the airline piping between the air tanks n stuff? Also, did you use etched walkways? Lastly, are you going to weather it? I look forward to seeing the other one when finished.

No piping, just the airbrake parts sitting alone on the one end. No, just the kit resin walkway...it actually looks pretty good.
I couldn't justify all these extras on a model that was iffy from the start. (although I paid to have etchings made) and I put the end cages on before the brake piping....D'oh!
Maybe on the next one, I'll go a liitle further on the details, if the resin parts go together well and I'm able to find CDS set HO-15 for the CP scheme I want.

Hi Sean,
Good job sticking with it to the finish. I know a few who would have tossed it on the ground and stomped it. I haven't done that (yet) but there are some bugger models out there. I have some really old Siera Models autorack kits, not sure if I will ever build those, as it is the clear yellow resin that I am unsure what to use to "glue" them together with. If I have to use epoxy, I will give them away, even though I paid a lot for them a long time ago. Not worth it to end with a garbage model for all the effort. Someone gave me one of the Sylvan kits, mine is the black CP version, and the parts don't look bad, but I don't recall much about the end cage parts... I know I have some putty work on the body before I start to fix some mold issues...
Do the plumbing next time B4 end cages ;-P Brian

You and I are suckers for punishment. I have built three transfer vans and one Point Sainte Charles Sylvan kits in the past five months. They can look very good with a lot of patience and work, however, I am still not a fan of flat cast kits. Were the sides bowed badly on this? Also, you talk about painting resin dark colours show the flaws are hidden...is that why the photo is backlight Edit - That makes sense about the decals. I couldn't figure out what the fine lines on the transfer van decals, in particular the noodle, were... I guess I haven't been in the hobby long enough.

Wow, I gotta hand it to you. I know that kit and talk about making a silk purse...
Kudos.

Brian;
Those Sierra model kits...they wouldn't be Whitehead and Kales autoracks would they?

Nice funky hopper, I've been thinking a CP one or two (an aluminum and a later steel one) would make a good roster addition...too bad they sound like a PITA to assemble.

I'm a bugger for punishment.... Started the next one, a CP steel hopper. This one is better with the skills I learned from the first one. Sorry the camera phone has a hard time focusing on a smooth white car...

You and I are suckers for punishment. About the above: I WISH I had that problem! Wow, that came out nice with the brass detail on the end. If it helps, it doesn't look like that was easy or a run of the mill job. Are those important to your modeling sceme or did you just really like those cars?

These cars were a staple in Canada from the 60's thru to the 90's...a must for any Cdn layout in that era... Their production followed the slab side hoppers and were a prelude to the large cylindrical hoppers.

definetly a staple, have 26 of the various hoppers waiting on the shelf, interested in a brib for the etching secret?

As much as I like to make it perfect, I am not submitting my models to competitions. No one is going to notice the exact details when my car rolls by 5' away at speed at our club. In fact I get so many compliments about the true likeness of them.
Having said that, yours looks great! What was your paint process? What paints did use?

Much happier with the next one....decals on (one side this evening) The script is a bit too big but CDS nailed the look.

Much happier with the next one....decals on (one side this evening) The script is a bit too big but CDS nailed the look. IIRC most if not all are retired now, but some of the steel CP cars survived in service into the late 2000's. I spotted CP 386716 in a CN train with a few "normal" CP cylindricals back in 2007. It caught me by surprise so no photo, but I did get a crappy video still...
