Here's my next project. With all this talk about "what if" locomotives, I'm kind of suprised this one has never been brought up. How about an SD15-2? It would use a standard GP15 long hood with Dash 2 cab, and battery boxes, and would be built on an SD-35 chassis. This would be along a similar line with the SDL-39, a short 6 axle unit with 1,500 horsepower. It would have a long rear porch like the SD40-2.

Here's the version I'll be building for the Buckeye Southern.

Interesting locomotive Randy. Your bell is on the wrong end, unless its based on NW practices.

So essentially it would be a modern version of the SD7 almost? I like it. I like the light weight concept for branch lines. Definitely something a lot of short lines would be into.
The fuel tank looks pretty tight between the trucks. What about a shorty tank like the Milwaukee would use for their branch lines?
Cool concept.

You could shorten the tank, no problem. It's just a quick drawing for eye candy. The SD-7/SD-9 and SD-35 share the same wheelbase.

Randy this is just way cool. I agree it is for sure the modern SDL39. It wont be soon as I got a ton of work to do but I believe one day I will have to build me one of these things..

I like it, especially the high nosed version and on that note, you've definitely got the bell on the right end!

Nice! Not to hijack, Randy did you ever get the CRSD-25 project going? I just wanted to see your plan of attack for it. I was thinking of making one from the parts I have.

I hit a stumbling block on the Alco, and I just threw my hands up in the air when I saw what it was going to take.

My website host blocks some countries because of spammers. I usually use Fotki, but they have moved and most of my photos are gone. This is on Photobucket, you should be able to see it now.

Oh yeah! I totally dig your idea Randy. That's so cool!! Now for me I'll take the 8cyl turbo "T" version with dynamic brakes. Guess I need to get to drawing that one. Man good idea though!

Randy you could realy do this cheap using a Smokey Valley GP15 kit. I might have an extra Atlas SD35 walkway too. The SD35's have small porches also so it'll definitely work out great on that size frame. Even an SD15AC would be cool too!

Yeah I think an 8-cylinder turbo with dynsmics would be better for NW and southern but it doesn't bother me too much because I can see it as a hump unit mated to a slug to.

How about a SD7-9 frame with a single tank? Might have to lengthen the body a bit, for balance. Otherwise, the rear truck may not have enough weight over it, compared to the front truck. Could shift the prime mover and such back, like a ph 2 GP39-2. Some MP15ACs had a 1100 gallon tank, for weight savings (and operational issues, need to get fueled more often). This something I could work on as well. I have SD7 frames and Walthers GP15 bodies laying around...

I assume you're using SD7-9 trade-in trucks?

Conrail's first three SD50 orders had the older flexicoil trucks just like their SD40-2's.
