Hello everyone Here is another Frankenstein model that I have started working on. Its a Baldwin AS-616 re powered with an EMD 567 prime mover. I started out with an old run Stewart AS-616 and a Proto 2000 gp18 long hood. I had to cut out for extra doors and steal them from another gp parts shell. As I was working on the stewart shell I found many dicrepecies in the model that bugged me, particularly the height from the top of sill to the rail top. Since there are so many discrepancies that I cant fix, this model will just have to be an approximation of the real thing. Here is a photo of the real thing www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3453320Here is what i have put together so far:

One quick nit to pick. It looks like the top of your transition angles down too far, making it a bit steep. It should be closer to the roof sheet metal at the edges. Over all, nicley done so far!

I built one of the repowered AS16 units the Nickel Plate had. It's very similar to your build. NKP had units repowered by EMD and ALCO. I plan to build one of the ALCO units some day.

I actually considered doing the NKP one after NW came in to possession off it. However, liked the six axle CNW one better. Im Kind of behind on my projects cause Im finishing the semester in college and remodeling my basement. Hope to get back on the projects sometime during Christmas brake.

This is one I made using a stewart AS616 shell and frame , a PK2 GP18 long hood . It rides on PK2 alco trucks and a pk2 motor .

Nice, William, Very Nice!! Thank you. I redid to post so I could describe what I used . I have other photo's of the front and some of the progress . I made my own number boards angles on the short hood and left the stewart shell long enough to meet the long hood then made the transition section out of styrene shaped the roof section then cut the thickness of the transition section out of the baldwin hood from the cab to the long hood so it was a slip fit and flush with both the long hood and extended short hood sides . Basically I cut a 1/4" down and .020" deep into the area left of the baldwin hood behind the cab to the long hood and fit the transition section in the slot and glued in place. Makes it easier and stronger. I am having problems with photo bucket once I get past that I will post the other photo's that shows what I am trying to describe. William

This is a C&NW baldwin/EMD unit . I used the same stewart short hood but didn't have a GP shell so I used a rail power products CF7 loog hood had to cut off the roof since it was too short in height you can see the white styrene I added and then refit the roof . I used new rad grills and the stewart AS616 trucks and redid the short hood to match a C&NW unit I had a photo of . I has a kato motor and fly wheels .

Hope it belongs here . This is my stewart RS3 which originally you built as a RS3 kit then I used the short hood front from another kit to build it into a hammer head . It has the PK2 power trucks and motor and stock old stewart frame . I made the number boards as best I could.

What I need to do is finish these models . I have one more RS3 all I need is another GP9 long hood so I can build an Alco/EMD like Katy used.

Interesting unit and me being a big 6 axle guy I have to agree it looks better than the 4. I like them both but 6 axles just work for me. You are doing a fine job on this and it looks really well put together. I am going to do a little research on the real deal because I have never seen one of these until you posted your build.
Keep up the good work

I'm doing something similar with a resin shell I picked up cheap. Want to make it into an AS-16m that was an ex-KATY, and CNW bought them, #1485 to be exact. This unit did not have dynamic brakes. The shell did not come with fans on top. So my question is this... what kind of fans did it have? GP 7/9 dome type? I've only got two photos to go by and they are of course taken from the ground and not too helpful. Does anyone know of an overhead view? What detail part company would have these? I've ordered from two different ones and I don't know if they are correct.
