Hi rscott417,
Nice work on the paint job, look like it will be a beauty when you complete it. Keep up the good work and post your progress as you go.

I agree with Erik - how did you manage to get the white stripe consistent? That's one hell of a mask job if you painted the stripe!

Thanks guys, the white line is painted and yes it was a real pain in the neck. I painted the body white then used this trim tape www.testors.com/category/138154/Trim_Tapes and with my giant fingers it really tested my patience...maybe thats why they call themselves Testors lol

Thanks for the tip, that's a great idea. I even bought some a while back but never used it...

that does look really good! i live in NYC (astoria/queens) and i've seen that unit a few times. last year was the last time i saw it and it was still shiny gloss not dull looking, there's dust/dirt ect. but it still looks like a new paint job!

Hey,
DId you start with a P2K? I just noticed you didn't change the radiator grilles, did you not see that or you didn't feel like changing those. Also, the class lights on these are recessed…
Are/did you do the handrails in the front the way they are on the prototype?

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't worked on this in a while but after your comment it got me searching around and I think the trim tape I used is meant for the actual stripe. I might strip the paint and get a closer green color to the prototype then use white trim tape as the stripe or I found this masking tape www.megahobby.com/132x120black.aspx that I think will work a lot better then the trim tape for a painted line. I have everything packed up right now due to apartment/neighborhood issues so I might be moving, but long story short I can unpack a few things to finish this up.

I was doing a search for gp38s on Walthers and I came across new MTH NY&A gp38s in black and green paint expected to come out in June. I'll probably end up picking up both #270 & #271 and strip the paint off of the ones I started for another future project. Once they come out I'll post them and probably add some prototypical details and whatever else MTH leaves out.
Diesel I just noticed your post now, I know about the radiator grills, class lights, steps, handrails and every modification that identifies an ex-LIRR gp38 but I'm not getting that involved with modifying the shell. The only thing I changed to the body was add the correct electrical cabinet that sits behind the cab on the conductors side only because the small Atlas one would have interfered with the white stripe of the paint scheme. When I get home I'll get more in depth with the information and parts.

This is a picture of the Atlas electrical cabinet. The blue stripe is where the height of the white stripe needed to be but also wrap around the cabinet which the Atlas one was too short. I used Details West part #161 which got me the correct height but had to remove the existing cabinet first which came out surprisingly good. Also this article is a must read for anyone modeling LIRR or an ex-LIRR GP38. Gives a bunch of things to look for and a really good parts list. I stripped the paint off my finished NYA gp38 and got the cannon & co radiator grilles in the mail. I have 2 atlas models that I wanted to use the cannon grilles but they are much longer than the ones molded to the body. Has anyone replaced the grilles on an atlas model with the cannon ones? What did you do to make them fit?

Thanks for info diesel, I haven't been on here in quite a while. I acquired an undecorated proto 2000 gp38-2 from (I believe) a member of this site. Already fully outfitted with detail parts for a prototypical LIRR/NYA gp38-2. So the P2K model will get my full attention as far as painting it goes and yes I have about 3 sets of the highball graphics decals and will be used again for this model. I also picked up a P2K LIRR gp38-2 that I will add the necessary detail parts to. The atlas models I was originally going to use for this project will be on the back burner for a while and might even come up with a fictional nyc based shortline that I can run on the layout.
