The Kato F40PH tanks arrived today. Just enough parts on them to chop up, though I had to extend the tanks by splitting a pen shaft to fit: Tanks look pretty darn good, even though one sits a bit kinked: Also extended the pilot to aid mounting the weedcutter plow - that, and I didn't like the look of the pilot standing 5 feet in the air like an abomination from the land of O-27: -Kurt

Kurt, you have to be pleased with the way the tanks turned out.

Kurt, you have to be pleased with the way the tanks turned out. -bill I can live with it . The extra Athearn fuel tank vapor release lines came in handy for plumbing them, I'll tell you that right now! -Kurt

Ditch light mounts and plow on; gaps are beginning to be filled. Anyone have a source for the modern marker light housings used on these units? Need to get myself three Q-fans, though it looks like they'll be Details Associates parts, for lack of Athearn's being available. -Kurt

P.S.: Anyone have a spare set of etched doors from one of the Kaslo VIA Rail F40PH-2 sets? So happens that those doors are a match for the MPI units.

It took ages to get my hands on those Q-fans. Finally installed them; decided not to go through the effort of cutting the roof to recess the fans. I also drilled the front pilot for a Kato coupler cut lever, but it looks as if it may be the last thing to get added. Anyone know if Kato's black plastic is paint resistant or not? -Kurt

Just a quick update - dynamic fan arrived, GP35 filter hatch cut and modified to represent the HEP exhaust hatch, cab sunshades added, and ditch light housings fitted. Still waiting on the F40 exhaust stack; looks as if customs is taking their time getting it to the USPS. Apologies for the lousy pictures - didn't intend to take any tonight. -Kurt

It took forever to get here, but the Minatures by Eric exhaust stack arrived today. Wasn't as hard to install as I expected: That wraps up the roof, and iomalley is kindly sending me a pair of the Kaslo doors to replace the Walthers pieces. Shouldn't be long before we're in primer... -Kurt

Didn't somebody make a photo etch set to detail these?

Didn't somebody make a photo etch set to detail these? Kaslo. Since the kit is for VIA Rail units, I only needed the cab doors (thanks to iomalley for that). -Kurt
