I would like to see the step light castings made with fiber optic coming out of them. Especially when the fiber optic would need to come in from the side of the step light...due to it being mounted on the side of a long-hood as a walkway light or under the top step where there isn't room to bring the fiber optic in from the top of the step light. C'mon...who's with me?!?!

Someone on here a few years ago did the step lights with fiberoptics and leds. They came out awesome.

Someone on here a few years ago did the step lights with fiberoptics and leds. They came out awesome. I've done it on an engine as well. If you have the room for the fiber optic to come out of the top of the step light casting it is easy. However, I'm doing an engine right now that the step lights are mounted right under the sill of the deck and there is no way to bring the fiber optic out of the top. It would need to come out the side of the step light casting. This would bend the fiber too much and break it...not to mention how do you get it to slide through the two drill holes you would need to make? So, if someone could make a step light casting with a "lens" that runs through the casting with a bit exposed to connect a fiber optic to...that would be effin tight!

A little to add to this thread. After several tries, I just made one step light with the fiber optic coming out of the top and bending 90 degrees. The fiber optic didn't break and it is holding the bend well. After making the first one I tried until I couldn't take it anymore to make another. Anyway, now, I have to figure out how to carve out the "bulb" and drill straight (there's the rub) through an assembled light to make others. I don't have the tools, or at least the know-how to create them, to do this consistently enough to do others. If I can figure this out one day, all of my engines will have working step lights from then on.

I would say a better option might be to get some 0402 SMD leds which are smaller then 0603 and might actually fit a casting directly as fiber optic can be a PITA to work with especially routing it to the light source.

I actually use those for ditch lights...they are way too big for a step light casting. Also, you would still need to drill out the step light to run the wires for the LED and that is the main problem I cannot solve. I need some way to square up the tiny casting, hold it firmly and a drill that is mounted and stable to drill with. Almost like a mini drill press with a custom holder for the "lights". I just don't have the funds for that type of tooling...but maybe some other creative person(s) that visit here do and might decide to make them and ship'em to me just for fun!

You could try pressing the light casting into a chunk of modeling clay, it may hold it enough to make drilling possible.
