Just an update...the dual decoder option is super simple (as long as both decoders have decoder lock) and you use JMRI. As long as you remind yourself to change CV 15 (or double check it) before programming, you'll be error free.

I'm an ex CR and "new" NS modeler too. I actually can live with the little function outputs as I use alternating ditch lights only on the front. It might bug you at first, but in the end, how many times do you operate a loco backwards and you need alternating ditch lights? I have some locos I use as consist locos only and I didn't even connect ditch lights (lazy me)

I recently decided to return to an earlier era, where, ditch lights are not much of a factor so this question is actually answered for me now but there are going to be one or two loco's in my stable that will have ditch lights both ends. If I'm going to have them, and sound, I will have to have flashing ditch lights at both ends. For the sake of one or two loco's an extra decoder will not be an issue.

You could always go with a Loksound Select decoder that has six function outputs !
