I was looking to buy a Kaslo M420R and use the Atlas U23B drivetrain. I am planning to build one like the one iaisfan built.
I got to looking for a Kaslo M420 and noticed that they build 4 different versions.
HL-8 BCR M420 HL-10 CN M420 HL-11 CN M420 rebuilt HL-12 M420R
What are the differences in the 4 versions? I know the newer tuck sideframes are included with the first 3 versions while the M420R reuses the U23B sideframes.
Are there any other major differences or is it small stuff like horns, bells, etc?
I guess the reason I'm asking is Highball only has one of the 4 versions in stock.

How do these compare to the stock models of this loco?

The coles note are:
BCR ones have smaller fuel tanks and dynamic braking CN as built have door handle latches CN rebuilt have knucklebusters and carbody filters by the engine intakes M420R is the P&W units only.

Thanks for the information. I did some looking and I see what you guys are referring to with the door handles vs latches, dynamic brakes and fuel tank sizes.
Now to find a Kaslo kit. I'd really like to find the M420R since this is the version I'd like to build most. I guess any would work for what I want to accomplish.
Thanks again guys!

I believe that AA Hobbies in Rhode Island has a M420R kit in stock.

Do the Kaslo instructions show how the U23B frame needs to be modified to fit the M420 resin shell?

Not really. you'll need to remove some material from the top of the frame under the cab, and some material off the ends. trial fitting will get you thru. I used a 4" angle grinder with a cutting disc. made quick work of it.

You need to take a lot off the sides of the frame also. It's a lot of work.

only if you want to superdetail the frame rails, otherwise you can leave the frame as is...

And close your eyes when you run it on a shelf layout higher than 4 feet.

I may pick up an extra frame to have as a backup. I have a friend with a Sherline mill and I think he will help me if I chose to mill down the U23B frame.

Wow, that's harsh Randy. I think it looks fine by me...If you were looking that close at my stuff, you'd get a swat in the back of the head anyway,

That does look really good, Sean. I guess I can see the benefits of building it both ways. I have a habit of overdetailing and getting too deep in projects that I bog down only to lose interest. It is good to know that the loco will look good either way.

It looks like I have a M420R on the way. Can't wait to get this project underway.

The Canadian M420 has a different frame side profile than the M420R, while you can get away with using the stock Atlas U Boat frame on the M420, the M420R frame is very exposed, and begs to be detailed. I milled down my frame like Randy did for his M420R and it looks really good once you add the C channel to the sides of the milled frame. A lot of work yes, but it really looks good!

I received my M420R from AA Hobbies today. Ordered Tuesday and received Friday. Great service and great price. Unfortunately it was the last one they had and he is no longer selling them. Bummer.
Thank You to pwrailfan for putting me onto AA Hobbies.
Kit looks really good. I'm going to familiarize myself with the instructions and start figuring how I need to modify the U23B frame for it.
I need a fleet of these!

I have gathered all of the parts for my pair of BCR M420Ws and the M420B but haven't done more than look at the shells and put them in a box. I did see someone scratchbuild brass frames for their models and I might try this route when I get back to them.
