Im looking to add a crew to my switching locomotives and haven't really found anything. Since it's a switching layout i'd like to have a brakeman hanging on or near the steps to jump off to throw switches. I found this set... www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/381-31611 but thats really the only one i saw from Walthers. Anyone have any thoughts or input?

They aren't very accurate, the engineer figures appear to be awake... As far as having a guy on the steps, you could probably modify one of the standing figures by cutting off a hand, attaching a piece of wire shaped like a hook, and when you want him to ride on the steps you can hook that piece of wire on the vertical railing. Maybe add some filler putty on the outside of the wire hook to help make it look more like a hand? I've also seen some modelers, mostly in 1/35 military modeling, that cut out sections of a figures limbs, replace them with wire, and build new elbows & knees out of putty in whatever position they want. 1:87 scale figures would be more delicate, but it should be easy enough. Or you could always gently heat the arms and legs and slowly bend them into position, just be careful not to melt the plastic or breathe in any styrene fumes

Not a bad idea, I did however find this set of figures by Preiser called "Steeplejacks". I thought the 2 figures on the far right of the picture had a pretty good climbing motion but might be able to try your method of heating them up for a closer fit.

Might not be a bad way to go, the hardhats would only be seen on hostlers or maybe by employees working inside an industry. If the material is pretty soft, you can probably heat the joints using warm water, rather than a flame or whatever

I'm probably just going to file down the hard hats, round off the heads and paint hair or maybe into a regular hat.

This figure is from the Kato set. The hands actually match up pretty well to the handrails.

even though they are not seen very well, how about suggestions for a cab crew? Either for inside a SW or the latest Athearn SD70ACe's??
Thanks David Greenberg Phx, Az

In N scale I've used WS engineer set for both locos and cabooses. And I'll be upswing them again in HO now.
