By the mid 1970's, the Nickel Plate (not merged into N&W) changed their tired paint scheme from Black & Gold to the Bluebird colors of Blue & White. Here are 2 NKP SD-40s west of Conneaut on their way to assist the American Freedom Train waiting at Sanborn Road in Ashtabula.

Here an ex-Illinois Terminal SD-39 leads 2 NKP SD-40s.

Gotta admit though Malcolm, it is kinda snazzy.

Gotta admit though Malcolm, it is kinda snazzy. How about doing a GE dash 8, skinny nose, for me? If it looks good, I might try one! BTW, I remember you saying you'd bought the NKP font from somewhere. Is it any good? Accurate? I was considering buying it to making my own decals. This project, if I commit to it, would be a good testbed.

Thank you for the all the great feedback. I had lots of fun with this project. A special thanks to the Purdue Railroad Club ( www.facebook.com/PurdueRailroadClub) for letting me use their track to make my inaugural run on. I have found I need to make a few adjustments as the front truck keeps derailing (though I hear this is a common problem for this model.) I was hoping to make my own back story myself, but haven't quite found the time to finish it yet. I did plan on making a SD40 at some point, in the GP30 paint scheme. But soon I hope to begin a Nickel Plate Genset that I have had in mind for a while now.

Randy, Did we buy the IT?? I love oddball 6-motor EMD's!!! I see the blue and silver as an interim scheme, back to stripes by 1990-92 or so. I bet the Bluebird was an attempt at a unified scheme for the NKP/C&O/EL/D&H. Just swap colors between roads! I wish I knew how many thousands of hours I have spent mentally arranging hypothetical NKP rosters. How do ICG style GP11's sound? I think Brewster could have handled a GP rebuild program. P.S. I put the SD40's in the 6000's and the SD9/38/38R/39/18M's in the 5900's. I think the newest (most recent) EMD's might just be a bunch of ex ATSF SD39's bought cheap from LTEX and pushed into service in patched paint until Muncie can fit them into the SD22ECO program.

That thing is a work of art! Love the bluebird version also...Tony K of the AM fame should have done a freelanced modern Nickel Plate, following your lead. Love it!

You can do a google search for the Illinois Terminal, and they discuss the partial ownership by the Nickel Plate & Wabash.
Back when I had my hobby shop, Doyle McCormack used to stop by every now and then when he came home to see his family here in Conneaut. I've known Doyle since I was a teenager, and I'm very good friends with his brother Lawn.
Doyle and I always talked about what the NKP would have looked like if the N&W merger had been passed over. We both agreed that the bluebird colors would have won out in the 1970s because the old black & yellow would have gotten old and wouldn't have met the new image with Wabash and the D&H being part of the company.

I never considered the Wabash, mainly because it would have made much of the west end redundant.
What is the road # on that 2nd SD40??

We both agreed that the bluebird colors would have won out in the 1970s because the old black & yellow would have gotten old and wouldn't have met the new image with Wabash and the D&H being part of the company. The only thing preventing a merger of the NKP and Wabash is the PRR's ownership of the Wabash. The N&W and the Wabash (as well as the LV and the DT&I/AA) were both vassals of the Pennsylvania; which is why the Wabash was included (and why the DT&I was nearly included) in the N&W-NKP merger. In other words: Unless the "Standard Railroad of the World" feels like it can get something out of a Wabash-Nickel Plate merger, it won't allow it.

You asked for it, and here they are. More views of the locomotive. I sadly forgot to take any pictures during the build. Makes me wish NS had painted the NKP livery onto an SD70ACe instead of a GEVO. Gorgeous model, Eric! ;D
